| Last week demonstrated the critical importance of community risk reduction efforts.
In collaboration with the Charles County Volunteer Fire/EMS Association Fire Prevention, the Westlake Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad, and the American Red Cross, personnel spent the day in the Hampshire neighborhood engaging with residents. The team provided fire safety education, identified common household hazards, assisted families in creating personalized home escape plans, and installed smoke alarms at no cost.
Smoke alarms are proven lifesavers. A working smoke alarm can cut the risk of dying in a fire by half. It is essential for every home in Charles County to have properly installed and maintained smoke alarms on every level and near sleeping areas.
The event was a resounding success, and preparations are already underway for the next Sound the Alarm initiative.
Special recognition goes to Sgt. Wonders, Firefighter Marcus Johnson, Firefighter Antonio Bravo, and Probationary Firefighter DJ. These members not only participated in the event, but they also ensured the firehouse was fully staffed during their Saturday off. Their dedication is greatly appreciated and reflects the strong commitment of the entire team.
