La Plata, MD – September 26, 2025 – The Charles County Dive Rescue (CCDR) Team has been awarded a $15,000 grant from the DC Fire and EMS Foundation, Legacy on Ice, to purchase a state-of-the-art Deep Trekker Photon underwater drone. The funding recognizes CCDR’s mutual aid response to the January 29 Potomac River plane collision.

The drone will work with CCDR’s Side Scan Sonar system, improving target identification and allowing safer operations in hazardous waters where diver deployment is risky. CCDR will cover the remaining cost with its own funds.

“This equipment enhances the safety and effectiveness of our water rescue operations,” said Rick Bowie, President of the Charles County Volunteer Firemen’s Association. “We are grateful to the Foundation for supporting our first responders.”
