At approximately 8:40 a.m., the Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department and several surrounding departments responded to a reported dwelling fire with possible entrapment. Upon arrival, crew from E121 (Westlake) encountered heavy fire conditions, prompting an immediate working fire upgrade. Firefighters worked quickly to bring the blaze under control within the hour while searching for occupants inside.
Three adults were able to escape the fire—two self-evacuated, and one was not home at the time. In spite of the heroic efforts by the Fire/EMS personnel on scene, tragically, two adults and four children were found deceased inside the residence.
Deputy State Fire Marshals, ATF agents, Charles County Sheriff’s detectives, the Calvert K-9 Search Team, and the Charles County Collapse Team responded to assist with investigation and recovery efforts. Heavy machinery was used to remove debris and ensure the safety of investigators that included assistance from our Collapse Rescue resources. The scene was cleared at approximately 1830 hours.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. At this time, no evidence of criminal activity has been found, and investigators continue to examine all possible accidental causes. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will confirm the identities and ages of the victims, with additional updates to follow.
One firefighter was transported to a local hospital for a medical issue, one firefighter was treated on scene, non-life-threatening injury.
At this time, we offer our sincerest condolences to the family involved in this tragicincident
