After 56 years of dedicated service, the Fire and EMS community recognizes the retirement of Chief Wayne Higdon, whose commitment and selfless devotion have made a significant impact on lives throughout the region.

Chief Higdon began his career with the District of Columbia Fire & EMS Department in 1975 before continuing as a Maryland Emergency Medical Technician. For more than five decades, he answered the call whenever his community needed him. Through advancements in technology, changes in medical practices, and thousands of emergency responses, he remained dedicated to helping others.

His career was defined not only by the emergencies he responded to, but by the many lives he touched. Chief Higdon helped bring 18 babies into the world, comforted families during difficult times, mentored new EMS providers, and served with consistent professionalism and humility. His calm presence and leadership became hallmarks of a career that exemplified the very best of emergency medical services.

For 56 years, holidays were interrupted, family gatherings postponed, and countless nights were spent responding to alarms instead of resting. Like many who choose this profession, Chief Higdon placed the needs of others ahead of his own, asking for little in return except the opportunity to make a difference.

His service reached beyond one community. Throughout the region, firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, dispatchers, law enforcement officers, hospital staff, and citizens came to know Chief Higdon as a trusted professional, respected leader, dependable partner, and dedicated public servant. His legacy is measured not just in years, but in the countless lives he influenced and the example he set for future generations.

With the close of this chapter, Chief Higdon now begins a new one, focused on family, friends, and a well-earned retirement after decades of sacrifice and service.

The Fire and EMS community extends its deepest gratitude to Chief Wayne Higdon for 56 years of service, leadership, and commitment. His career stands as an inspiration to generations of emergency responders who will follow.

Thank you for every call answered, every life saved, every family comforted, every lesson taught, and every sacrifice made.

Congratulations on your retirement, Chief Higdon. May this next chapter bring you the fulfillment you have given to so many throughout your career. Though your pager may now be silent, your legacy will continue to echo throughout the Fire and EMS community for years to come.

Enjoy your retirement, Chief Wayne Higdon. You have truly earned it. When you see him around Indian Head, say THANK YOU and buy him a cup of coffee!!
