Scott Hutchinson is widely recognized as the steady force that keeps the Southern Region fire program operating safely and effectively. In 2025, he responded to numerous wildfires and supported prescribed burns across private, local, state, and federal lands, bringing decades of experience to each assignment.

Scott is a constant and trusted presence, whether serving on the fireline, preparing burn units, or mentoring crews. He plays a central role in training and workforce development, leading courses such as S-130 basic wildland firefighter training for nearly 70 personnel and guiding staff through chainsaw certifications, equipment operation, and fireline tactics. His mentorship has directly strengthened the region’s capacity and professionalism.

Scott’s impact goes well beyond the field. He ensures that the Southern Region’s fire equipment is consistently maintained and ready for any mission, oversees improvements to the Cedarville Fire Center, and has helped design and fabricate specialized equipment to support operations. He also works closely with local fire departments to strengthen coordination and build understanding of Maryland Forest Service capabilities.

Respected across agencies and generations of staff, Scott’s leadership, technical expertise, and unwavering commitment make him indispensable to the Southern Region and a deserving recipient of this award.
