Firefighters responded Monday afternoon to a reported structure fire in the 4200 block of Rufus Madeline Place in Marbury after multiple 911 calls reported heavy fire conditions.

The fire was dispatched at approximately 1:52 p.m. When crews arrived, they found a one-story single-family home with fire showing from the basement and spreading quickly throughout the house. Due to the large amount of fire and worsening conditions, the incident was declared a working fire. The fire also caused a brush fire on the side of the property.

Fire suppression efforts were complicated by ammunition stored in the home's garage area. As conditions deteriorated, the fire breached the roof, and structural instability developed, including a hole in the floor above the basement. Command ordered all interior crews to evacuate and switched to defensive operations.

Because the area has no hydrants, additional tankers were requested, and supply lines were laid from the main road for water shuttles. A roof collapse later occurred, requiring firefighters to continue efforts from outside the structure.

Command ensured a water supply was established, allowing crews to keep up fire suppression efforts. No firefighter or civilian injuries were reported. A dog that was inside the residence at the time of the fire was later confirmed dead.

A total of 47 Fire/EMS personnel responded to the incident. The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office will investigate the cause and origin of the fire.
