| While many residents were enjoying the holiday weekend, volunteer firefighters from across Charles County spent the afternoon battling a large brush fire that consumed approximately 14–16 acres of wooded terrain off Bluff Point Road. The initial 911 call was received at approximately 3:30 PM, followed by multiple reports from King George, St. Mary’s, and other areas in Virginia as smoke became visible across the region. Upon arrival, Command was established by Battalion Chief 8A Danielson, who immediately requested additional brush trucks and ATVs due to the challenging terrain. Command was supported by Chief 4 Siarkowski and Duty 8 Mott. Maryland State Police Trooper 2 was deployed to provide an aerial view of the fire, with Chief 2 onboard supplying real-time updates to command. Maryland Forestry units were also requested and worked diligently to cut fire lines, helping to slow the spread of the flames. Volunteer fire departments from throughout Charles County operated for more than six hours under difficult conditions to bring the fire under control. We extend our sincere thanks to the regional fire departments who provided mutual aid during this incident, including Calvert, St. Mary’s, and Naval District Washington Stations 20, 21, and 28. We also want to recognize the outstanding efforts of our department auxiliaries, who ensured firefighters had much-needed refreshments throughout the incident, and extend our appreciation to the following local businesses for their support: Sandy Excavating, Nanjemoy Country Store, and G.L. Shannon Equipment. (we will add photos as we receive them) |
