On July 13, 2025, just after 4:00 PM, Prince William County alerted the Charles County 911 Center of a report involving a male subject in the water near the pier in the Newington area. Prince William County immediately dispatched their marine and rescue units to the scene, requesting mutual aid from Charles County. Charles County promptly deployed several marine resources, including Fire Boat 8, Fire Boat 4, Fire Boat 7, and Dive Rescue Boats 13 and 13B, to assist in the search and rescue operations. Fire Boat 8 established “Charles County Command” in coordination with Prince William’s unified command structure. A coordinated "grid search" was conducted, with units strategically positioned under the direction of Prince William Command. After approximately two hours of focused searching, Dive Rescue Boat 13 successfully located the victim adjacent to the pier on the Virginia side of the river, near the last known point of contact. The incident transitioned to an investigative phase, with Prince William County and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) assuming responsibility for the scene. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones affected by this heartbreaking incident. Charles County Fire and EMS acknowledges and appreciates the tireless, heroic efforts of the 28 volunteer Fire/EMS personnel who responded to this call. Their commitment, professionalism, and cooperation during this unified command operation exemplify the very best of regional emergency response. |
